Blog: Men's Study

*Many of you expressed a desire but are unable to attend our gatherings.  I set up this resource blog to create an online presence for our gatherings.  I will post notes on a previous meeting, resources for the current readings, or questions for an upcoming gathering.  The resource blog is below the description.

The Institutes of Christian Religion is the foundation of Reformed theology.  They are a monumental work theologically, politically, philosophically, and socially.

The purposes of this study for men are threefold: regular, purposeful encouragement of fellow men (Heb. 3:12-14), growing in grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ (2 Pet. 3:18), and training for ministry (2 Tim. 2:2).

Even if you do not aspire to serve as a future elder or deacon, your home, marriage, church, and work demand that you continue pursuing godliness and knowledge of His will.

Our time together will include prayer and study.  Please bring your copy of the Institutes and a Bible.  I will ask each of you to teach at least one class per book.  (Calvin’s Institutes is divided into four books.) Your teaching will aim for four goals:

  1. Summarize your reading in a paragraph.
  2. Ask two discussion questions to help illuminate the reading.  For example, in the "Prefatory Address" (in the McNeill/Battles edition), you could ask, "How does Calvin see the Institutes relating to his commentaries?"  The question is not meant for us to assess his work but to understand it.
  3. Offer an evaluation on one aspect of your reading.  You can use outside resources, you can compare with Scripture, or you can offer your own thought.
  4. Offer an application of your reading to daily life. Calvin wrote the Institutes as instructions for practical living.
